Points East Again and on to Combat

The time had come for the soldiers to board the troop train for the trip to Indiantown Gap Military Reservation in Pennsylvania. It is doubtful if even one soldier would have wanted to stay out in the desert—they were all ready to find a cool spot. They had almost forgotten what cool air felt like. They didn’t know it then, but the time would come later when just a little of that hot desert air would have felt good.

The troop train wound its way across the United States and arrived in Indiantown Gap. Here Captain Cosner had the last word in the conflict with Desmond over the bearing of arms. He put Desmond on permanent KP, and he was given the job of scrubbing the pots and pans and washing the tables. Lye was put in the water for these jobs, and Desmond’s hands became sore and raw and bleeding. He couldn’t touch anything without his hands hurting.

When Desmond left the Arizona desert, Dorothy also came back home to Richmond, Virginia. But since Desmond could not even get a pass to leave the camp area, there was no use for her to come up to Pennsylvania and live near the camp.
